1. What is slow/controlled release fertilizer?
 Generally speaking, the word "release" herein means that the nutrients transformed from chemical substances into absorbable form which can be uptaken by plants. The word "slow release"herein means that the release rate of chemical nutrients is much slower than quick soluble fertilizers. "Controlled release" means the release pattern (including release time and release rate) controlled by all kinds of controlling mechanisms set in advance is consistent with the plant nutrition demand. Controlled release fertilizer (CRF) is a kind of fertilizer which release nutrients according to nutrition demand of plants determined by all kinds of controlling mechanisms set in advance.

2. The appraising standard of controlled release fertilizer.
A fertilizer must meet the following criteria completely then it can be called "controlled release fertilizer".
i) the release ratio of nutrients at 25¡æ within first 24 hours should not exceed 15%;
ii) the release ratio of nutrients within first 28 days should not exceed 75%;
iii) the total nutrition release ratio during specified release time should not less than 75%;
iv) the release curve of a special controlled release fertilizer should be consistent with the nutrition demand curve of the specified plant.
